The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi has disclosed that the payment of bail in the security agency is illegal.
Adejobi, however, said that ‘administrative bail’ is allowed in the Force, explaining that it is not to be paid for.
He made this known on X, formerly Twitter on Saturday while responding to a post from an account, @oris616 – who claimed that police officers ‘cannot do without bail money’, except Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) is made available at police stations.
Responding to the post, the police spokesperson said: “I have said it severally that the police force doesn’t support or approve the payment of bail money at any stage. We only grant administrative bail and with no payment attached.
“We need to collectively put an end to the problem of bail money. We must endeavour to ask questions and urge the “charge and bail” agents to desist from encouraging the payment. We also want to urge our legal practitioners to work with the police to curb the menace.
“Equally, many civilians live fat on bail money as agents, and they are comfortable with it. They even lie on the police to gain from their “clients.” Not in most cases the police bill suspect’s relations to pay for bail, but such is encouraged by some individuals who do ‘charge and bail’.”
He called for the support of the citizens in condemning the act, adding that “suspects should make use of our help lines and platforms to call our attention to this.”
